I’ve been sketching daily lately! I usually have about an hour a day to make artwork, and am trying out a daily sketchbook as a way to contain my art practice. Also, thank you for this wonderful newsletter 🙂
Thanks so much for the kind words, Anne, and for sharing your practice :) An hour a day is such a great practice! Do you have any tips for us who struggle to find time?
Had a look at your sketches in your Substack - they look incredible!! 😍
I’m so happy to offer a tip! I found that with a little daily time spent sketching (10 minutes is sometimes what it ends up being), art ideas started bouncing around in my mind at other times of the day, (during a commute, doing laundry, etc.) — and I realized that these thinking spells could be included in my art practice too. I also started to notice little things I didn’t see before (like the last few yellow leaves on the tree outside the window) — another unexpected contribution to the practice :)
So interesting that even with as little as 10 minutes that creates the seed for some ideas later in the day. I also started noticing the change in looking at things since I practice more drawing. It is wonderful, it makes life so much richer :)
I'll definitely experiment with being more rigorous with the drawing practice in the mornings. I draw every day almost (mostly during the evenings or at work) but unlike with writing, I don't have a consistent practice or theme since I came back from holidays. Curious to what that can become with even only a few minutes every morning!
Thank you for this post as it has inspired me to make a fall sketch tomorrow before the season changes more. Then, a few months from now, I'll make an effort to sketch the same scene so that I have a "winter sketch."
Glad to hear it has inspire you, Monica! Autumn is the perfect season to capture changes. The light, the colours, the trees losing their leaves... Hockney and his Arrival of Spring is great inspiration as well. Keep it going!! :)
