London Calling! is a collection of fictional design briefs inspired by London and Londoners.
Most of the work we do daily as designers falls within the realms of reality. Breaking, deliberately, those boundaries is often an effective way to expand our creative skills - and our imagination. These stories aim to be playful and inventive design exercises.
After many complaints from Londoners who seem to profoundly believe red does not represent their public affairs anymore, a local competition has been launched to rebrand London’s famous double-decker buses.
These are some key points from the competition brief:
Londoners are fine with the current design layout of the bus, which they intend to keep
The competition is about re-designing the look of the buses and the message they convey - avoiding red at all cost1
The submission consists of one only image illustrating the design entry
Participants can submit as many entries as they’d like and use their preferred technique2
Looking forward to seeing your ideas!

Here’s my proposal:
The Bowie, The Pink Floyd, and The Elton double-decker buses celebrate London’s artists and music. They also give a touch of colour (and ambient music) to the city.
😎🎸
Cheers and happy sketching! 💫✏️

I love red, indeed! And I love London’s red double-decker buses. Just wanted to add a little bit of drama to the story 🙃
Some tips on this: you can find a photograph of the bus and trace its outline, then try different designs sketching over it. You can also do different quick sketches of the bus in different projections. Or perhaps try a collage with different patterns you like. Up to you! Don’t forget to have fun :)
