The drawings were slowing down (…) space to the page, erasing the desire to draw everything. He now understood that empty paper could be as eloquent as busy lines. — Peter Bossley, One Year Drawn
At the end of March, we took a couple of days off, rented a car, and drove up north of Auckland, to Whangārei Heads, where we booked three nights (and three sunsets) in a classic Kiwi bach, at the feet of the mountain, overlooking the bay.
These drawings attempt to capture the essence of the place: a quiet, vast space of smooth green hills and vibrant turquoise water. And very, very, blue sky. We were lucky with the weather so we spent our mornings hiking the peninsula.
One day we went down a track to find the secret Peach Cove and Beach. We went down (and up later again) 850 steps with a riser of probably at least 20 cm tall. I am still debating with myself whether it was worth it!
One afternoon I sketched the two beautiful plants we bought in a Kauri Reserve where we stopped for lunch on the way up to Whangārei. We named them Spring and Autumn, because of the dichotomy of the season we were about to start, having recently arrived at the South Hemisphere after a long winter.
Yes. We were lucky with the weather, and we could enjoy these three beautiful sunsets while sitting in the bach overlooking the bay, the sun setting on the other side of the bay, behind the mountains.
And all the colours.
Happy sketching! ✏️✨

Love how you've used the Neopastels. I have a set, but need to spend more time with them experimenting.
Really gorgeous!!!!!!
