📝 Filling Our Creative Well
Websites that inspire me on design, architecture and drawing
‘Art is an image-using system. In order to create, we draw from our inner well. (…) As artists, we must learn to be self-nourishing. (…) Filling the well involves the active pursuit of images to refresh our artistic reservoirs. Art is born in attention.’ - Julia Cameron, The Artist’s Way
Art is born in attention. A highly efficient (and underrated) way to improve our creativity as architects and designers, is to curate our own library of references.
Julia Cameron calls this process ‘filling the well’: these are images and words that build up our creative imagery that helps us create. These are the references we draw ideas from when we design.
The Internet is a huge and easy-access library of images and a great place to find inspiration to fill our creative well.
A visit to a gallery or a little adventure would also be an excellent idea, but the Internet has so much to offer - and it’s only a click away. The amount of information is overwhelming though, so here are some of the websites on architecture and drawing I visit for daily inspiration. You could start with these : )
This daily newsletter is, in their own words, a resource of emotional and practical guidance for creative people. They interview artists in different industries with a focus on their creative practices and struggles. I also follow them on Instagram, where they publish key captions and quotes from the interviews. I love this newsletter, it provides so much value.
🟡 Divisare
This is my favourite library for architecture and design references. I visit this website daily - it’s like my Architecture Newspaper. They update the site quite regularly with recently built projects. There’s usually a section at the bottom of the front page called ‘Architect’s Notebooks’ that displays sketches and drawings of some of the projects published on the site.
They are an organisation that, according to their words, explores the role of drawing in architectural thought and practice. Drawing Matter organises events, exhibitions, and publications. I like that they dive into the more conceptual and theoretical aspects of architecture and they do a great job curating the articles on their website.
This is an Instagram account that collects domestic spaces, an exploration into the imaginary of the housing archetype. A curation of projects, photographs, drawings, mixed media, and conceptual art around the notion of the home.

Happy sketching!
